Selecting double glazing for your home is a major decision. It's an important, lasting investment in your property. You'll want to get it right. Fuel costs are rising. You need to create a comfortable home environment that remains affordable to heat.
If the windows in your home consist of single glazed or your double glazing which was installed prior to April 2002, replacing them with an energy efficient window will save you money. It can reduce the energy you need to heat or cool your home by up to 20%.
Installing Energy Saving Recommended double glazing can cut heat loss through windows by half. If you can't afford to replace all the windows, why not choose the rooms that cost you the most to heat?
Double glazing works by trapping air between two panes of glass creating an insulating barrier that reduces heat loss, noise and condensation. The latest energy efficient glass is called 'low emissivity'. This glass contains an invisible metal coating on one of the two sheets of glass that make the window. This makes the glass reflective, keeping heat in and the home warmer in the winter and reflecting heat back in the summer, making the home cooler.
Energy Saving Recommended double glazing can cut heat lost through windows by half, as well as saving you around £135 a year on your heating bills. It can also save you around 720kg of carbon dioxide (CO2) a year.
If everyone in the UK who needed double glazing fitted it we'd save around £700 million and the equivalent of around 740,000 households' CO2 emissions.
All windows we sell have a BFRC label and we provide you with an energy perfomance certificate which can also be used for your HIPS should you ever come to sell your property.
The most energy efficient windows (rated A to C) also carry the Energy Saving Recommended logo issued by the Energy Saving Trust.
No. In the BFRC rating scheme the whole window (including the frame and any casement) is rated on its energy saving properties.
The cost varies not only between the various ratings (A to E) but is also dependent on the frame materials used and the size and style of window. A rated windows will cost more than B, C, D and E rated windows, but this has to be set against the energy savings you will make as you go up the ratings scale.
The rule of thumb is that Energy Efficient Windows cost less than the heat lost through old windows, over a given period of time.
